Statement on COVID-19 | April 1st 2020

Dear friends of ethnocineca,

Unfortunately, the 14th ethnocineca edition, scheduled May 7 – 14, 2020, will not take place due to the current situation regarding COVID-19. We announce this cancellation with a heavy heart as, after numerous hours that have gone into organising the festival, we were now looking forward to the best part: the screening of the 2020 film programme, hosting our international guests, honouring documentary film and engaging with the audience during the festival week.

But there is also good news! We made use of the past two weeks and were considering our options: During the planned festival dates, we will make a selection of this year’s programme available to you, for the first time online. Stay tuned – more info to follow here and on our website.

It is of great importance to us to honor the artistic work of filmmakers. For this reason, we, together with our Jury members, have decided to nevertheless select the winners of this year’s competitions, and to hand out the awards and price money in all five categories. In May, the jury of the long film categories, Austrian Documentary Film Award (ADA), International Documentary Film Award (IDA) and Best Ethnographic Film (EVA) will announce the winning films. The short film awards, ethnocineca Student Shorts Award (ESSA) and International Shorts Award (ISA) will also be awarded, but, due to the exceptional circumstances, for the first time not as an audience award but also by a jury.
