Biographie

João Leite was born in the Portuguese town of Braga in 1962. Passionate about drawing, he joined the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Porto but soon after dropped out. In the following years, he worked as a sailor and moved to Maceiò in the northeast of Brazil where he successfully exhibited his artwork twice.

After Leite spent a few months travelling across India he eventually settled in Brussels and completed his degree at the Institut des Arts. In 1998, he finished his first documentary "The game considered one of the fine arts" (Le jeu, considéré comme un des beaux arts). He then worked as a freelance journalist, a director of photography for several international television stations and he taught at the Academie Arts Visuels in Brussels.

From 2009 to 2010, Leite was the director of the new Belgian TV station Europa r1 TV. His short film "Lonelyland" was released in the same year whereupon he decided to return to Brazil: his most recent documentary "Aquamazonida" was filmed in the Amazon region in 2014.
