"The Gaijin" tells the story of a westerner’s experience in a foreign country. It follows Luke Jonathan Driscoll - an American who has been residing in Japan for nearly 3 years and who makes a living predominantly from English speaking related jobs. The film attempts to contextualize the recent surge of western style weddings in Japan against a backdrop of understanding how westerners negotiate their identity. It also attempts to show how both Japanese and Foreigners use each other as foils to exoticise and remake themselves - thus showing the processes by which people "other" themselves.
