BINTOU
Simone Catharina Gaul | Burkina Faso, Deutschland 2015 | 64 Min. | OmeU

Director‘s note

You can‘t predict life, nor can you predict how a documentary finds its form. This film was meant to be completely different at the beginning. It was meant to be about the relationship between Africa and Europe. A relationship full of clichés and misleading information. In Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso I became acquainted with the young dressmaker Bintou. She spent a lot of time with white expats and dreamed of a career in Europe. Bintou and I became friends. We decided to make a movie together questioning the image we have of each other. The closer I got to Bintou the more I understood her family background. She is an orphan and was violated when she was 17. This crime was a big disgrace for the entire family and that prevented them from fighting for Bintou‘s rights in court. Bintou got pregnant. Christiane, her daughter, was raised at a children‘s home, so Bintou could complete her apprenticeship. Bintou managed to live her life between work, her dream of a career and taking care of her child on weekends. None of her white clients knew her family background. In everybody‘s view she was the sweet, young dressmaker, who was always happy, making cheap and lovely African clothes. But then while we were shooting the fi lm, she got a call from the children‘s home: Christiane could no longer stay there. Suddenly Bintou’s life was turned upside-down. Just like our movie...
