PANEL DISCUSSION 2025

ON HAUNTINGS – CINEMATIC APPROACHES TO GHOSTS

TUESDAY, 13.05. | 5–6:30 pm
ZIMMER | Piaristengasse 6–8, 1080 Wien

FREE ENTRY

Hauntings, possession, and the voices of ancestral spirits guide the narratives in the films by Anja Dreschke and Michaela Schäuble, Iris Pakulla, and the short film by Yuefei You. The four anthropologists and filmmakers follow the spirits of their ancestors to restore the balance between humanity and nature in Mongolia, explore the rhythmic dance steps of the ‘tarantatas’ in Italy, and track down spirits on construction sites in Indonesia.

Ana de Almeida follows in conversation with Iris Pakulla, Anja Dreschke, and Yuefei You the trail of the spirits that haunt their films and explores how the invisible can be made visible and cinematically tangible.

Discussion in English.

In Cooperation with VANEASA – Visual Anthropology Network of the European Association of Social Anthropologists, Institut für Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie an der Universität Wien and dok.at
