BEYOND REPRESENTATION
ETHNOGRAPHIC INSIGHT AND THE POLITICS OF SOCIAL JUSTICE DOCUMENTARY

What do we mean when we say that documentary films can create political or social change? Some critics allege that many conventional “social justice films” fall short of meaningful effect when they reproduce common humanistic tropes such as inspirational narratives where goals are neatly achieved, or shocking narratives that generate outrage and pity while reinforcing the social divisions between film subjects and viewers. Some avant-garde approaches locate political meaning in disrupting the habitual reactions of viewers to formal elements, while contemporary anthropology tends to stress ethics of representation and power dynamics between filmmakers and subjects, as well as the expansion of access to production technology. In this talk, I will explore the genre of social justice documentary from the vantage point of anthropology, asking, how can cinematic empathy translate to meaningful social action and shifts in political subjectivity?
