17th ETHNOCINECA

International Documentary Film Festival Vienna 2023

Thursday 4th to Thursday 11th May 2023

Programme Folder 2023 (pdf in German)

Welcome to the seventeenth edition of the ethnocineca – International Documentary Film Festival Vienna! From 4 to 11 May, the halls of the Votiv Kino and Kino DeFrance will once again become the center of documentary film art and ethnographic filmmaking in Vienna. With this year’s festival theme, LIMINALITIES, we emphasis the tension between standstill and transformation.

48 short and feature-length films as well as an extensive side programme with a keynote, a masterclass, a panel discussion, and a film talk invite you to examine experiences of change. In today’s turbulent times, many crucial questions about the future are still open and we are confronted with various crises the endings of which are yet to be known. Following the ever-present spaces in between, we thus engage with transitional phases and intermediate states. The films in this year’s program show a diverse spectrum of narrative forms and possibilities of expressing and negotiating socio-political questions and current events in unstable times.

In this year’s competition films you’ll find cutting edge international documentary cinema. The winners of the five award categories will be announced during the Award Ceremony, accompanied by screenings of the winning films of the two Short Film Awards. And the films of our 10-days in-house film workshop, the ethnocineca Filmwerkstatt, will also celebrate their premieres during the festival.

We would like to thank all filmmakers and jurors, all sponsors and partners and the entire team of this year’s edition and wish you inspiring and entertaining film experiences. Enjoy diving into the world of images on the big screens in the cinemas.
