Alexander Beer in conversation with Lidija Zelovic and Lisa Polster.
In their films Bürglkopf and Home Game, Lisa Polster and Lidija Zelovic explore different dimensions of flight and (non-)arrival in new countries.
Polster’s Bürglkopf exposes the crude mechanisms of exclusion and the invisibility of refugees who do not have a clear residence status. She shows how spatial isolation hinders participation in society and isolates refugees in a so-called ‘return centre’. Lidija Zelovic’s Home Game, a long-term study and introspective family portrait, testifies to what it means to be able to move and live freely in a new homeland after fleeing war, yet to be constantly considered a war refugee. The sense of belonging is negated by right-wing populist politics that propagate the division of the population.
As a common thread, both films deal with questions of home, freedom and belonging. The Film Talk is dedicated to cinematic approaches to this topical and highly controversial subject.
