FROM THE POLE TO THE EQUATOR
Yervant Gianikian, Angela Ricci Lucch | Germany, Italy 1986 | 96 Min. | Music Only
Using footage from the archives of Luca Comerio (18471940), a pioneer of Italian documentary, Gianikian and Ricci Lucchi have crafted a unique and compelling documentary from spectacular film footage shot literally from the pole to the equator. The filmmakers have hand-tinted, slowed-down and reworked Comerios 1910 footage of exotic people and places arctic whalers, missionary schools, Tibetan monks and Cossack horsemen, into the most fascinating of colonial psyche and domination ever to reach the big screen.
