At the traditional game of Kash Hamam, pigeon fanciers teach their pigeons above the rooftops of Beirut to catch animals from other flocks in order to add them to their own flock. Oranges thrown into the air cause the birds to perform daring flight manoeuvres, and for a brief moment the heavy everyday life can be forgotten. After all, Lebanon has been in an economic free fall for years; social, political, and religious tensions add to it.

Lea Najjar’s impressionistic feature-length debut KASH KASH is a vivid portrait of Lebanon and its chaotic state, where rooftops high above city streets become a hopeful refuge.
