Between 1958 and 1961, Margot Dias participated in four ethnographic trips to the then Portuguese colony of Mozambique. In the process, she produced notes, several hours of film, and hundreds of visual and audio recordings of Makonde culture. In 1996, as a student, Alves Costa recorded an interview with the then 90-year-old Margot, which she uses as the starting point to trace this woman’s eventful life. And the filmmaker travels with the material to Maputo to confront the descendants with Margot’s recordings and thus also with their own history.

Like a collage, MARGOT works with the different materialities of image sources and reflects on the nature of anthropological research and its meaning for researchers and researched.
