War, bloodshed, displacement; a traumatized society after 24 years of brutal conflict. Among the Acholi in northern Uganda spirits influence every aspect of human life. Ancestral spirits protect persons, families and clans whereas wild, non-social spirits inflict misfortunes and suffering on the society. A cautious give-and-take between human beings and the spiritual world is required to maintain the world as it should be…Yet, sometimes things get out of control, persons and communities are afflicted with epidemics, violence or other calamities. Wild spirits take possession of people, healers or of prominent rebel leaders. At present, the Acholi are committed to restructuring their society – with the help of spirits.
