Lizbeth has made it her life’s work to care for the dead of her small Mexican community, to sing for them, to pray for them, to bury them and to watch over them. Liz is the keeper of ancient knowledge that understands life and death as part of the same inseparable cycle. In her devotion to the dead, a peaceful spiritual universe unfolds that combines African, indigenous and mestizo traditions and stands in contrast with the brutal Mexican reality that unfortunately makes her work become more and more necessary.
As a sensory ethnographic film, THE ONE AMONGST THE SHADOWS brings to mind the importance of mourning and farewell rituals and explores the connections between life and death.

BIOGRAPHY
Anthropologist and filmmaker, graduated from the CCC Mexican Film School. Sandra Luz López Barroso’s short film ARTEMIO premiered in the Sheffield DOC/FEST 2017 where she won the New Talent Award. Her debut documentary feature THE ONE AMONGST THE SHADOWS funded by Tribeca Film Institute, Sundance Documentary Fund and Ambulante / W.K. Kellogg Foundation, was Best Film at the FICUNAM International Film Festival 2021.
