Die Filmstudentin L schreibt jahrelang Briefe an ihren entfremdeten Geliebten. Diese Briefe der anonymen Protagonistin geben Einblick in die drastischen Veränderungen, die um sie herum passieren. Es sind Reflexionen über das heutige Indien aus studentischer Perspektive: L nimmt an Streiks und Demonstrationen gegen die hindu-nationalistische Partei PJB von Narendra Modi teil und prangert das starre und ungerechte Kastenwesen an.

Ausgehend von diesen Briefen entfaltet sich in A NIGHT OF KNOWING NOTHING durch die Vermischung von Realität und Fiktion, von Träumen, Erinnerungen, Fantasien und Ängsten eine amorphe Erzählung, deren politische Dringlichkeit den Film selbst zu einem Kunstwerk des Aufbegehrens macht.

BIOGRAPHY
Payal Kapadia is a Mumbai based filmmaker and artist. Her short films AFTERNOON CLOUDS (2017) and AND WHAT IS THE SUMMER SAYING (2018) premiered respectively at the Cinéfondation and the Berlinale. Her first feature, A NIGHT OF KNOWING NOTHING, was part of the 2021 Director’s Fortnight selection.
