Paulo Carneiro travels to Switzerland to meet some of his fellow countrymen far away from Portugal. Like him, they are big fans of cars. In nightly conversations at gas stations, in front of garages, and in parking lots, Carneiro and his interlocutors explore questions of identity, belonging, and community through their common love for cars. And the car is more than a commodity: on the one hand, they seem to find a form of home in it, on the other hand, it becomes a status symbol of a successful life in a faraway place.

In PÉRIPHÉRIQUE NORD, Carneiro himself steps in front of the camera and, in carefully set up and clear images, conducts conversations about distance, connection, tire treads and horsepower.
