Aya wird inmitten eines Rituals in einen leuchtenden Raum gehoben. Maher reist zum Schrein eines heiligen Mannes, um herauszufinden, ob das Licht und die Liebe, von denen die Menschen sprechen, real sind. Und Sonia sieht, wie das Licht vom Finger eines Menschen in ihr Herz strömt. Durch die Begleitung mit der Kamera und das Experimentieren mit der transformativen Kraft von Bildern und dem Medium Film versucht das Filmteam Wege zu finden, wie diese Lichterfahrungen eingefangen werden können.

LIGHT UPON LIGHT ist eine Reise in mystische Traditionen des Islam und erzählt von der Suche der Menschen nach Licht in einer Zeit von Dunkelheit und politischer Spannungen in einem postrevolutionären Ägypten.

BIOGRAPHY
Christian Suhr is a filmmaker and professor of anthropology at Aarhus University. In Egypt, Denmark and Papua New Guinea, he has explored experiences of spirit possession, psychiatric illnesses, religious healing, and how film can be used to approach unseen dimensions of human life. He is the author and director of the award-winning film and book “Descending with angels” (MUP 2019). “Light upon light” is the first film in a planned trilogy with the Cairo-based film collective Hassala Films.
