Am Maracaibo-See, im Gebiet der geheimnisvollen, scheinbar lautlosen Catatumbo-Gewitter, bereitet sich das Dorf Congo Mirador auf die Parlamentswahlen vor. Tamara, eine gewiefte Geschäftsfrau und aussichtsreiche Vertreterin der chavistischen Partei, kämpft mit allen Mitteln um jede Stimme, während die oppositionelle Lehrerin Natalie nur wenig Erfolgschancen hat.Unterdessen sieht die kleine Yoaini zu, wie ihre Gemeinde buchstäblich im Schlamm versinkt und mit ihr ihre Kindheit und Unschuld.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN VENEZUELA offenbart ein Spiegelbild der politischen Missstände im heutigen Venezuela, und zeigt gleichzeitig, wie ein kleines Dorf trotz Korruption, Umweltverschmutzung und politischem Verfall überlebt.

Biography
Venezuelan filmmaker Anabel Rodríguez Ríos, based in Vienna, Austria, gained a Masters in Filmmaking at the London Film School, which was sponsored by British Council and the Venezuelan Foundation ‘El gran Mariscal de Ayacucho.’ Her latest short “The Barrel,” part of the Why Poverty series, went to over 50 International Film Festivals, including HotDocs, IDFA and was awarded a TFI Latin Grant.
